JOINT PARISH NEWSLETTER

THIS WEEK’S GOSPEL REFLECTION: John 14:1-12 – “I am the way, the truth and the life”
Jesus is ‘the way’ with and to the Holy Spirit. At the same time, he is also our destination. It is very encouraging to realise that in following Jesus, we come to be with the Holy Trinity – the fullness of happiness and delight forever! Furthermore, as Jesus says a little later in the evening (the evening of the Last Supper), in following him, (who is light and truth), we are given the help and guidance of the Holy Spirit, who is the Spirit of Truth and Love sent from the Father.
All three Persons of the Holy Trinity bring about our salvation, enabling us to arrive at our heavenly goal: ‘to know you, the only true God and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent’, God the Son in human form.
So we have a very personal vocation: each of us is called in knowledge, love and truth and life, to friendship with the Three Divine Persons. What dignity each one has! In Isaiah, we read of God calling, ‘Bring back my sons from far away, and my daughters…everyone who bears my name, whom I have created for my glory’.
Our Faith on Sunday

READINGS FOR 3 MAY
1st Reading: Acts 6:1-7 – They elected seven men, full of the Holy Spirit
Psalm 32: May your love be upon us, O Lord, as we place all our hope in you
2nd Reading: 1 Peter 2: 4-9: But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood
Gospel: John 14: 1-12 I am the Way, the Truth and the Life
Gospel acclamation: Alleluia, alleluia! Jesus said, I am the Way, the Truth and the Life; no one can come to the Father except through me. Alleluia!
Communion antiphon: I am the true vine and you are the branches, says the Lord. Whoever remains in me, and I in him, bears fruit in plenty. Alleluia.

MAKING AN ACT OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION
Prayer of St Alphonsus
Alone or together with others in your household
Make the sign of the cross
You could read the Gospel of the day
Then share prayer intentions quietly or aloud
Say the Lord’s Prayer
Then make an Act of Spiritual Communion:
My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.
I love you above all things, and I desire to receive you into my soul.
Since I cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart.
I embrace you as if you were already there and unite myself wholly to you.
Never permit me to be separated from you. Amen.
Close with the sign of the cross

OFFERTORY COLLECTIONS DURING THE LOCKDOWN
The Archdiocese has now issued a set of guidelines for priests and parishioners.

They advise against offertory envelopes being posted through presbytery doors because this increases the number of non-essential journeys being made by vulnerable people. It also requires the counting and retaining of cash in the presbytery and subsequent trips to banks / post offices – all increasing the likelihood of spreading infection.
The Archdiocese therefore recommends that parishioners who are able to and who wish to continue with their offertory donations can do one of the following:
1. Wait until the crisis is over and then write out 1 cheque only, payable to the parish, and place in that particular week’s offertory envelope / an envelope with your offertory number on (so that it can be identified for Gift Aid, if appropriate)
2. Take out a standing order with your bank. You will need the parish account name, sort code and account number. Please either email the parish office for this information, or phone the Tarleton presbytery on 01772 812242 and we will send you (mail / email) a Standing Order Mandate form. You may wish to make your offering to the parish on a monthly basis, rather than weekly in this instance.

EASTER TALK ON ACTS OF THE APOSTLES: Fr Andrew at St Clare’s in Fulwood delivered a really interesting and thoughtful presentation on the Acts of the Apostles – our Easter readings – last Tuesday on You Tube. You can access his talk (with illustrative slides) on:-https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h_bWOfGsCD4
It lasts 1 hour exactly and is well worth it. It helps if you have a copy of Acts with you, but is not essential by any means. Enjoy!

Please email the Parish Office with details of any other online services you know of that may help parishioners at this very difficult time. We will try to include them in next week’s Newsletter.

POPE FRANCIS’ PRAYER FOR THE END OF THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC He is asking people to recite the rosary and say this prayer afterwards (a second, much longer prayer is in this week’s Universe – www.the catholicuniverse.com )
O Mary, you shine continuously on our journey as a sign of salvation and hope.
We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick, who, at the foot of the cross
were united with Jesus’ suffering, yet persevered in your faith.
‘Protectress of the Roman people’, you know our needs
and we know that you will provide so that, as at Cana in Galilee,
joy and celebrations may return after this time of trial.
Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform ourselves to the will of the Father
and to do what Jesus tells us.
For he took upon himself our suffering and burdened himself with our sorrows,
to bring us, through the cross,
to the joy of the resurrection. Amen
We fly to your protection, O Holy Mother of God;
Do not despise our petitions, in our time of need,
But deliver us always from every danger,
O Glorious and Blessed Virgin. Amen

Part of the 2nd prayer includes the following invocations:
Beloved Mother, help us to realise that we are all members of one great family, and to recognise the bond that unites us, so that in a spirit of fraternity and solidarity, we can help to alleviate countless situations of poverty and need.
Make us strong in faith, persevering in service, constant in prayer.
Mary, Consolation of the Afflicted, embrace all your children in distress and pray that God will stretch out his all-powerful hand and free us from this terrible pandemic, so that life can serenely resume its normal course.
To you, who shine on our journey as a sign of salvation and hope, do we entrust ourselves, O Clement, O Loving, O Sweet Virgin Mary.
Amen

CAFOD UP-DATE Emergency Appeal Launch – 30 April
CAFOD launched its coronavirus emergency appeal on 30 April. The effects of coronavirus on developing countries where CAFOD works are likely to be devastating. Families without enough to eat and without access to clean water and healthcare are particularly vulnerable to coronavirus. The poorest and most marginalised communities will be pushed further into poverty. Your prayers and gifts are needed now more than ever to help protect the lives of those in poor communities. While we are not able to hold physical collections in our church, you can donate as individuals at cafod.org.uk/coronavirusappeal/

NEWS ITEMS FEATURED IN THE CATHOLIC UNIVERSE THIS WEEK

• An Irish Dominican brother, Br Chris Gault, trained as a doctor before answering a call to the religious life. He’s now back in scrubs, helping to fight the virus in a Belfast hospital.
• The five metropolitan archbishops of England and Wales are currently engaged in talks with the government regarding a partial opening of churches.
• Fr Paddy McCafferty is hearing confessions whilst socially distancing – through the locked gates of his church in Ballymurphy (W Belfast).
• The St Vincent de Paul Society in Leeds has been working overtime to provide food parcels to the vulnerable, as well as friendly, supportive phone calls to those who are lonely and isolated. If you think you’d like to help, please contact www.svp.org.uk
• S Korea and New Zealand are hailed as top examples of dealing with the virus: both countries followed WHO advice to ‘test, test and test again’ in order to track and trace sources of infection. As a consequence, though restrictions are still in place, their infection rates are down to single figures and they are easing restrictions in a planned and monitored way.
• The Catholic Times is now included as an insert within the Universe. This week, it features an article outlining the controversy over the role of Pope Pius XII, and his ambiguous role in the condemnation of the Nazi genocide of Jews in Europe 1941-45.
• The Pope John Paul I Vatican Foundation – has been set up by Pope Francis, to preserve and promote the writings, thinking and example of the ‘smiling pope’ who died only 33 days in to his pontificate, in 1978.
• It’s not just oranges that supply vitamin C – have you tried red peppers, broccoli and kiwi fruit – all of which score more highly than oranges in delivering the ‘hit’ of Vit. C that we all need for supporting joint, repairing damaged tissue and building up the body’s immune system?

AS ALWAYS, IF YOU HAVE ANY QUERIES OR NEED ANY HELP, PLEASE CONTACT FR ANDERS AT THE PRESBYTERY IN TARLETON ON 01772 812242, OR EMAIL EITHER OFFICE.

WITH EVERY BLESSING FOR THE COMING WEEK
