COLLECTION THIS WEEK: World Communications Day
Theme for 2024:  “Artificial intelligence and wisdom of the heart: for a fully human communication”
AN EXTRACT FROM POPE FRANCIS I’s MESSAGE
I think of the reporting of wars and the “parallel war” being waged through campaigns of disinformation. I think too of all those reporters who have been injured or killed in the line of duty in order to enable us to see what they themselves had seen. For only by such direct contact with the suffering of children, women and men, can we come to appreciate the absurdity of wars.
The use of artificial intelligence can make a positive contribution to the communications sector, provided it does not eliminate the role of journalism on the ground but serves to support it. Provided too that it values the professionalism of communication, making every communicator more aware of his or her responsibilities, and enables all people to be, as they should, discerning participants in the work of communication.

SACRAMENT OF 1st HOLY COMMUNION
Please remember our children in your prayers as they meet together to continue their preparations, for the great day when they meet Jesus in a very special way, making their 1st Holy Communion this summer.  May Almighty God bless them, and Sarah & Phil Dawson, who are instructing them.

RCIA – A MASS FOR NEW CATHOLICS

MESSAGE FROM MARY’S MEALS: PRAY IN MAY WITH MARY’S MEALS
During the month of May, dedicated to Our Lady, we invite you to join us in praying for the hungry children who rely on our life-changing school meals, and for all the children and families around the world who live in poverty. SUDAN CRISIS APPEAL – NEXT SATURDAY, 17 MAY
The war in Sudan has been going on for a year now and has dropped out of the news – it’s a ‘forgotten’ war. Yet many people there, including children, have had to flee their homes and are now without shelter, food, water and medicines.
CAFOD is working with local partners to try and help them to cope, but they are desperately in need now as starvation and famine threaten the most vulnerable.  Please give what you can next week to help CAFOD in this vital work.  Envelopes will be available and please remember to gift aid, if you can.  The additional money makes a huge difference.  Thank you.

DON’T FORGET! PARISH FOODBANK – DONATIONS ARE ALWAYS WELCOME
Thank you for donations already received, which have been taken to the foodbank centre at St Mary’s in Leyland.   They are particularly short of tinned pasta, tinned meat / fish and puddings.
Please check that donations are well before their BB date!
Thank you all for your kind-hearted generosity.  It makes such a big difference.

HOW TO DONATE TO THE CHURCH
Standing Orders
– Many find this an easier alternative to trying to remember to bring cash along each week.  Forms are available in the porch / from the Parish Office.  You can determine the amount and when it is deducted each month.  Please post compoleted forms to your bank.
Envelopes – easy, because they can be prepared before coming to church.  They afford some ‘privacy’ for the amount donated. Please contact the Parish Office so we can arrange this.
Cash / cheque donations each week and very gratefully received.
Gift Aid If you are a taxpayer then you can easily help the parish to claim 25% extra on top of every donation you make.  Eg: your donation of £10 per week could become £12.25  going to the church. Filling in a simple form to register your name and address means we can claim an additional 25% of your gift
Please collect a form from the narthex on your way out today, complete and return to the Parish Office.
THANK YOU for your continuing support and generosity in these very challenging times.

OPPORTUNITIES TO GET INVOLVED IN THE PARISH
Now that parish activities are starting up again, there are a number of opportunities to become a bit more involved in parish life, particularly: stewarding/welcomers, driving deliveries to St Mary’s foodbank every other week, singing with the choir, flower arranging, church cleaning, altar serving, fund-raising.  Help is welcome from all ages!  Please contact the Parish Office by email or ring on Fridays, in order to find out more.

MUSICAL TREAT FOR THE WEEK
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5PkN_pbnVCY
Purcell’s beautiful duet ‘Sound the Trumpet’ is performed with great sensitivity and musicianship here by the choir of Westlak Girls High School in Wellington, New Zealand.
The celebration of the glorious feast of the Ascension features psalm 46: ‘The Lord goes up with shouts of joy; the Lord goes up with trumpet blast’, so this couldn’t be a more fitting tribute.

WITH EVERY BLESSING  FOR PARISHIONERS & FAMILIES THIS WEEK
