INTENTIONS THIS WEEK

SPECIAL FEASTS THIS WEEK
25 July – St James, apostle
26 July – Ss Joachim & Anne, the parents of Our Lady
29 July – Ss Martha, Mary & Lazarus, faithful followers of Our Lord
30 July – St Peter Chrysologus, Archbishop of Ravenna and eloquent preacher

GRANDPARENTS & THE ELDERLY DAY – 24 JULY
“In old age they will still bear fruit” (Psalm 92:15)
Last year Pope Francis decided to institute a Church-wide celebration of a World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly. He declared it will be held on the fourth Sunday of July, close to the liturgical memorial of Saints Joachim and Anne, the grandparents of Jesus.
This year the Second World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly falls on Sunday 24th July.

Pope Benedict XVI Prayer for Grandparents
Lord Jesus,
you were born of the Virgin Mary.
the daughter of Saints Joachim and Anne.
Look with love on grandparents and the elderly the world over.
Protect them! They are a source of enrichment for families, for the Church and for all of society.
Support them as they grow older.
May they continue to be for their families strong pillars of Gospel faith,
guardians of noble domestic ideals, living treasuries of sound religious traditions.
Make them teachers of wisdom and courage,
that they may pass on to future generations the fruits of their mature human and spiritual experience.
Lord Jesus,
help families and society to value the presence and role of grandparents and the elderly.
May they never be ignored or excluded, but always encounter respect and love.
Help them to live serenely and to feel welcomed in all the years of life which you give them.
Mary, Mother of all the living,
keep grandparents constantly in your care, accompany them on their earthly pilgrimage,
and by your prayers, grant that all families may one day be reunited in our heavenly homeland,
where you await all humanity for the great embrace of life without end.
Amen

CAFOD FIX THE FOOD SYSTEM
How the food system is broken
Over the last few decades the way we produce food has really changed. Massive areas of land are used to grow just one or two crops.  More machines are used, special seeds have been created which need a lot more chemicals to grow and these are controlled by big business.

MASS INTENTONS
Mass intentions are welcome, not just for our dear departed, but for any other occasion eg in thanksgiving, successful outcome (exams / operation), wedding / anniversary blessings. Please write your name and intention, with the preferred date – if applicable –  on a piece of paper and place in an envelope, along with your offering, either in the weekly offertory basket or through the presbytery door.  It may not be possible to guarantee the specific date requested, for various reasons, however, every effort will be made to find a date as near as possible.  Thank you for your understanding.

OPPORTUNITIES TO GET INVOLVED IN THE PARISH
Now that parish activities are starting up again, there are a number of opportunities to become a bit more involved in parish life, particularly: stewarding/welcomers, driving deliveries to St Mary’s foodbank every other week, singing with the choir, flower arranging, church cleaning, altar serving, fund-raising.  Help is welcome from all ages!  Please contact the Parish Office by email or ring on Fridays, in order to find out more.

MISSIO NEWS – OUR MISSION BOXES
Even during the pandemic and various lockdowns, we were able to send £442.00 to Mission for 2021.  Thank you to everyone who contributed so generously.

WEEKLY COVID UP-DATE FOR MAWDESLEY & CROSTON
Fewer and fewer people are testing now, so weekly figures lack the accuracy that they used to have.  The weekly Office for National Statistics (ONS) figures, published every Thursday, have always been the most accurate.
Please see Coronavirus (COVID-19) – Office for National Statistics (ons.gov.uk)
A lot of people are still extremely worried about catching Covid, so smaller churches (like Ss Peter & Paul’s) will still encourage parishioners to wear face masks, in order to protect everyone from possible transmission.

LET’S KEEP TALKING – SUPPORT FOR ANYONE SUFFERING IN ANY WAY AS A RESULT OF THE PANDEMIC
Please pick up a leaflet on your way into/out of church, from Lancs & S Cumbria Mental Health Support.  Help is out there if you’re struggling to cope, or you know someone who is struggling.

MUSICAL TREATS FOR THE WEEK
