REFLECTION FOR THE 13th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Today’s Gospel is one of the harsher warnings that Jesus gives his followers, or those who want to be his followers. A follower of Jesus has to be prepared to give up their human security and place all their trust in the Lord.
It follows therefore, that if we seriously want to follow him, then we cannot also be focussing our attentions on human comforts and possessions. The Gospel is a challenge to all of us, to review the way we live and to recognise just how much we are governed by our consumerist society.
Jesus insists that our commitment to him should be total and immediate, if we really want to become his followers.
The examples he cites of “leaving the dead to bury their dead” and not staying to “say goodbye to my people at home” are certainly extremely demanding. Burying the dead is a duty and a responsibility; saying goodbye to people when you’re leaving is thoughtful and a courtesy, but in this context, Jesus is warning us not to let the affairs of the world stop us from following him.
PRAYER INTENTIONS THIS WEEK
Pope Francis’ prayer intention for June:
For Christian families around the world
We pray for Christian families around the world, may they embody and experience unconditional love and advance in holiness in their everyday lives.
Let us pray…
That all Christians may strive for holiness by repenting of past sins;
That all who doubt or distrust the Gospel message may recognise the risen Christ in the goodness and kindness of others and learn to turn to God in faith and love;
That the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ for all people may teach us that there is no such thing as a worthless life, or a person God does not love;
That as Covid restrictions are lifted and more people receive their vaccinations, may the bonds of our relationships be renewed and strengthened.

WEEKLY COVID UP-DATE FOR MAWDESLEY & CROSTON
Fewer and fewer people are testing now, so weekly figures lack the accuracy that they used to have. The weekly Office for National Statistics (ONS) figures, published every Thursday, have always been the most accurate.
Please see Coronavirus (COVID-19) – Office for National Statistics (ons.gov.uk)
A lot of people are still extremely worried about catching Covid, so smaller churches (like Ss Peter & Paul’s) will still encourage parishioners to wear face masks, in order to protect everyone from possible transmission.
LET’S KEEP TALKING – SUPPORT FOR ANYONE SUFFERING IN ANY WAY AS A RESULT OF THE PANDEMIC
Please pick up a leaflet on your way into/out of church, from Lancs & S Cumbria Mental Health Support. Help is out there if you’re struggling to cope, or you know someone who is struggling.
MUSICAL TREATS FOR THE WEEK
John Rutter: For the beauty of the earth – YouTube
This is a really lovely version of Rutter’s popular anthem, sung by an extremely accomplished youth choir. There’s much to enjoy, listening to this.
