READINGS FOR 29 AUGUST

Gospel: Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23, You put aside the commandment of God to cling to human traditions
Gospel acclamation: Alleluia, alleluia! By his own choice, the Father made us his children by the message of his truth, so that we should be a sort of first-fruits of all that he created. Alleluia!
Communion antiphon: Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called the children of God.  Blessed are they who are persecuted for righteousness, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.

REFLECTION FOR THE 22^nd  SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
The Pharisees and the scribes are amongst those who receive the harshest treatment from Jesus, yet they were the strictest followers and interpreters of the Law.  But it is their rigid and inflexible approach to the Law that Jesus finds abhorrent.  They had built a whole catalogue of religious practices and traditions which had little to do with loving God or loving their neighbour. 
For Jesus, hypocrisy is detestable, especially when the perpetrators are religious leaders.  He says that their worship is worthless and that “the doctrines they teach are man-made”.  It’s the heart that Jesus is interested in – which should be the centre of love in every person.  When we say that a person “has their heart in the right place”, we mean that despite their many defects and limitations, they try their best to show love to others.
Problems arise, of course, when the heart is not in the right place.  Then the heart can become the generator of all kinds of evil intentions.
How do I know if my heart is in the right place?  I should ask myself what motivates me: is it a desire to love others, or am I using them for my own ends?  If I only use others for my own ends, then I need to turn to Jesus, in faith, and ask him to help me to find the right words or the right course of action.  In other words: Lord, help me to be true to your message of love.

Archbishop Malcolm has asked us to pray the following at this time of crisis:
God Our Father, each person is precious to You.
You are the Giver of life.
Have mercy on us and protect us at this time, as the coronavirus threatens health and life.
You are an ever-present Helper in time of trouble.
Watch over those who are suffering, give strength to those who are aiding the sick and give courage to all in this time of anxiety.
We ask this of you in the name of your Son. Jesus Christ.
Amen.

That all who doubt or distrust the Gospel message may recognise the risen Christ in the goodness and kindness of others and learn to turn to God in faith and love;
That the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ for all people may teach us that there is no such thing as a worthless life, or a person God does not love;
That as Covid restrictions are lifted and more people receive their vaccinations, may the bonds of our relationships be renewed and strengthened

WORLD DAY OF PRAYER FOR THE CARE OF CREATION – 1 SEPTEMBER 2021
When Pope Francis instituted the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation in 2015, he said: “The annual World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation offers to individual believers and to the community a precious opportunity to renew our personal participation in this vocation as custodians of creation, raising to God our thanks for the marvellous works that He has entrusted to our care, invoking his help for the protection of creation and his mercy for the sins committed against the world in which we live.”
Theme for 2021 – “Restoring Our Common Home”
We gather during a global pandemic and two months prior to the UN Climate Change Conference (COP26) due to be held in Glasgow in November. The pandemic and the environmental crisis are interconnected – both are global emergencies, both are having a disproportionate effect on the poor and the vulnerable, both are highlighting the injustices that exist across the world, and both threaten the future of humanity and the earth.
During the pandemic, many people have encouraged the wealthier countries to share the vaccines with poorer countries. After a hopeful start, the wealthier countries have focused on themselves and left the poorer countries to struggle. This is not only selfish but foolhardy because the pandemic will only be over when everyone has access to the vaccines. The same is true for the environment. Our ‘common home’ will only be protected if we all work together.

FROM THE ARCHDIOCESE: Season of Creation
During the last eighteen months, many of us have been aghast at those who remain sceptical about the Covid-19 pandemic and see it as some sort of conspiracy. Sadly, there are plenty of people who view the constant warnings about climate change in a similar way. However, the evidence is undisputable, and the latest report from the United Nations warns us that if we don’t take action now, the damage to the earth, our common home, will be irreversible. Just this month we have heard about terrible fires in Europe and the United States, as well as unprecedented flooding in various cities.
In 2015, Pope Francis issued an encyclical letter, Laudato Si’, about these issues and established a Season of Creation in the Church’s Year to help us to focus on the cry of the earth. The season begins this week with the ‘World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation’ on 1 September and runs until the feast of St Francis of Assisi on 4 October.

CAFOD’S RESPONSE TO CURRENT WORLD EMERGENCIES
CAFOD is responding to significant crises across the world this week.
We are working with local Church organisations in Haiti to deliver emergency aid to people affected by the catastrophic earthquake and tropical storm.
In the tragic situation in Afghanistan, we are working to ensure the safety of our local partners and their communities.
We are supporting local aid workers to deliver urgent food and water supplies to hundreds of thousands of people facing extreme hunger in Tigray in Ethiopia, South Sudan and north-east Nigeria.

A NEW BISHOP FOR LIVERPOOL
On 3 September, Canon Tom Neylon will be ordained as the ninth Auxiliary Bishop of Liverpool.  Canon Neylon was born in Warrington and served at a number of diocesan parishes, including St Julie’s in Eccleston.  He then served as Dean of St Helens and Vicar-General for the Archdiocese, before joining St Wilfrid’s in Widnes.  His appointment is warmly welcomed, coming as it does in the lead-up to the publication of our Synod’s Pastoral Plan, and as we – hopefully – begin to emerge from the worst effects of the pandemic, looking forward to a new and better future.

World-class pianists, Imma Setiadi and Nigel Clayton bring us a programme of pieces for four hands by Debussy, Dvorak, Brahms and Chabrier, inspired by song and dance. The evening will also premiere a piece, inspired by Psalm 126, written specially for the occasion by Dr Philip Wilby.

APPLICATIONS FOR BISHOP RAWSTORNE ACADEMY
One of the entry requirements of C of E schools requires evidence of the commitment of one of the parents or guardians of the prospective pupil to the Christian faith, ie fortnightly worship for a period of at least one year. Please note that the Church is contacted to verify attendance for the year preceding entry.  For pupils hoping to enter in Sept 2022 the period of assessment started on 1 Sept 2020. Therefore, for entry in Sept 2023, the period of assessment will begin this September. HELP TO PROTECT OUR RESIDENTS: FREE COVID LATERAL FLOW TESTS KITS ARE AVAILABLE
Local councils are asking all residents to take 2 Covid tests a week so that they can accurately monitor the number of cases in the borough.  They are able to help people who test positive to self-isolate – and there is funding available to help if that means that someone is unable to go in to work for the required period.
Free test kits will be distributed at Mass over the next few weekends.  They can also be dropped off at your home if you’re unable to get to Mass.  Please contact the office.

MASS ON SUNDAYS
As you may be aware, our Bishops have lifted the obligation to attend Sunday Mass.

YEAR OF ST JOSEPH
With his apostolic letter, ‘Patris Corde’ (‘With a Father’s heart’), Pope Francis has proclaimed a ‘Year of St Joseph’ running from 8 December 2020 (Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception) to December 2021.
At the end of the letter, he asks us to pray the following prayer to St Joseph:

Hail Guardian of the Redeemer,
Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
To you, God entrusted his only Son,
In you, Mary placed her trust,
With you, Christ became man.
Blessed Joseph, to us too,
Show yourself a father
And guide us in the path of life.
Obtain for us grace, mercy and courage
And defend us from every evil.
Amen
PRAYER CARDS FOR THE YEAR OF ST JOSEPH: Prayer cards are available – please notify the Parish Office and we will send one out to you so that you can say the prayer to St Joseph during the week.  We know we can rely on his guidance and protection in every difficulty and challenge.  And his intercessions are certainly much-needed by us all at the moment!

Instead of putting money in offertory envelopes each week, those who are able to make an offering are asked to either:

• Write a monthly cheque (payable to ‘Ss Peter & Paul Church’) and post to the presbytery with a covering letter and one offertory envelope for gift aid purposes.
• Contact the office (by phone or email) to request a Standing Order mandate for your bank –

 HELP DURING THE PANDEMIC

COVID TESTING
FREE test kits are available from your local chemist.  Each kit contains 7 tests (2 per week, plus 1 extra in case there’s a problem with one of the tests.
Residents can also book an appointment if they are experiencing symptoms of Covid19 via www.gov.uk/get-coronavirus-test

COVID VACCINES – IMPORTANT
Please note that the Catholic Church has given its full support to the vaccine (all three of them) and is keen to assure Catholics that there are no moral issues linked to the science of the vaccines, whatsoever.  The vaccines are safe. The Archbishop of Liverpool is anxious to dispel any myths and urges Catholics to have the vaccines.  Cardinal Vin Nichols has had his first vaccine.  So has the Pope  – and hospital chaplains have also received their first doses.

Unfortunately some people are trying to exploit the fears of others, so be on the alert for so-called vaccine scammers, who will try and charge you for a vaccine. 
There is NO CHARGE.
The vaccines are free. 
GP surgeries are not paid.  The government is paying for the whole programme.

Please also note that there are some scammers pretending to be the NHS.  There is only one official NHS email address, which is www.nhs.uk

The NHS will never ask for details like family maiden names of bank accounts / credit & debit cards.  Nor will they require you to pay anything for the vaccines.  If you are contacted by a group claiming to be the NHS and they’ve asked for these details, it is a scam and you must ignore it.  Then report it!

It is essential to continue to observe the ‘basics’: hand hygiene, face masks, social-distancing – and lots of good ventilation – at all times
