THIS WEEK’S GOSPEL REFLECTION – FOR PENTECOST
The word ‘Pentecost’ comes from a Greek word, Pēntekostē, meaning ‘fiftieth’. It refers to a pattern of Jewish feasts. Pope St Leo the Great (400 – 461 AD) makes important connections when he writes: ‘As once to the Hebrew people, freed from Egypt, the Law was given on Mt Sinai on the fiftieth day after the sacrifice of the Lamb, so after the Passion of Christ, when the true Lamb of God was killed, on the fiftieth day from the Resurrection, the Holy Spirit came down on the apostles and the community of believers’. Pope St Leo describes this as the Second Covenant and as the fulfilment of a long-awaited promise. (The Fathers of the Church, Vol. 93). For us, as for the apostles, it means that God’s love has been poured out, living and breathing within each one of us.
READINGS FOR 31 MAY
1st Reading: Acts 2: 1-11 – They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak
Psalm 103 – Send forth your Spirit O Lord, and renew the face of the earth.
2nd Reading: 1 Corinthians 12: 3 – 7, 12 – 13 In the one Spirit, we were all baptised
Gospel: John 20: 19 – 23 – As the Father sent me, so I am sending you: receive the Holy Spirit
Gospel acclamation: Alleluia, alleluia! Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love. Alleluia!
Communion antiphon: They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke of the marvels of God, Alleluia.
THE SEQUENCE – follows the 2nd reading
Holy Spirit, Lord of Light,
From the clear celestial height
Thy pure beaming radiance give.
Come, thou Father of the poor,
Come with treasures which endure,
Come thou light of all that live!
Thou of all consolers best,
Thou the soul’s delightful guest
Dost refreshing peace bestow;
Thou in toil art comfort sweet;
Pleasant coolness in the heat,
Solace in the midst of woe.
Light immortal, light divine,
Visit thou these hearts of thine,
And our inmost being fill.
If thou take thy grace away
Nothing pure in us will stay,
All our good is turned to ill.
Heal our wounds, our strength renew,
On our dryness pour thy dew;
Wash the stains of guilt away.
Bend the stubborn heart and will; melt the frozen, warm the chill;
Guide the steps that go astray.
Thou, on us who evermore thee confess
And thee adore,
With thy sevenfold gifts descend:
Give us comfort when we die,
Give us life with theee on high;
Give us joys that never end.

THE ACT OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION
My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.
I love you above all things, and I desire to receive you into my soul.
Since I cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart.
I embrace you as if you were already there and unite myself wholly to you.
Never permit me to be separated from you. Amen.
HOW TO MAKE YOUR OFFERTORY DONATIONS DURING THE LOCKDOWN
The Archdiocese has now issued a set of guidelines for priests and parishioners – and also set up a direct online-giving facility.
They advise against offertory envelopes being posted through presbytery doors because this increases the number of non-essential journeys being made by vulnerable people. It also requires the counting and retaining of cash in the presbytery and subsequent trips to banks / post offices – all increasing the likelihood of spreading infection.
The Archdiocese therefore recommends that parishioners who are able to and who wish to continue with their offertory donations can do one of the following:
1. Wait until the crisis is over and then write out 1 cheque only, payable to the parish, and place in that particular week’s offertory envelope / an envelope with your offertory number on (so that it can be identified for Gift Aid, if appropriate)
2. Take out a standing order with your bank. You will need the parish account name, sort code and account number. Please either email the parish office for this information, or phone the Tarleton presbytery on 01772 812242 and we will send you (mail / email) a Standing Order Mandate form. You may wish to make your offering to the parish on a monthly basis, rather than weekly in this instance.
3. Via Liverpool Archdiocese’s online giving website: Each parish has its own unique link on the website and a photograph of your church is shown to provide additional reassurance to donors that they are donating to their parish. All donations will go to the parish selected by the donor.

NEWS ITEMS FEATURED IN THE CATHOLIC UNIVERSE / TIMES THIS WEEK
• The website Open Church Doors encourages lay Catholics to indicate their willingness to volunteer at their local parishes in order to safely enable private prayer in Catholic churches once again. The website – https://opendoors.church/ forwards the name and email address of each volunteer to their local parish, so that the priest can know that they have enough help to disinfect surfaces and manage social-distancing.
• The Bishop of Shrewsbury believes that the pandemic has ‘ shone light on how we care for our most vulnerable and the significance of recognising the value and dignity of every human person’
• The number of children using foodbanks has increased by 122% and the wave of pandemic panic-buying by so many consumers left supply chains on their knees.
• St Peter’s Square was open to the public on 24 May (Ascension Day) and many visitors turned up for a special blessing from the Pope.
• WHO warns that the world is in the middle of the first wave of the virus, especially in C and S America and S Asia. The lifting of lockdown restrictions is likely to give a false sense of safety to many, leading to careless behaviour (lack of social distancing) and a consequent rise in the number of infections in a second wave.
• Fr Francis Marsden writes on the ‘Outpouring of the Holy Spirit’
• Staying positive: Colonel Sir Tom Moore’s secret to a long and happy life
• Dame Judi Dench – fashion on the red carpet, from the 1950s to the 2010s.
• Look out for hedgehogs in trouble in your garden – please don’t feed them with milk: they’re lactose intolerant. Use water only.
CHURCH OPENING: There are no plans for churches to open in England and Wales at present. Cardinal Vincent Nichols and the Bishops have made representation to the Government for churches to open for private prayer.
As and when that day comes, both Our Lady’s in Tarleton and Ss Peter & Paul in Mawdesley will be ready to facilitate safe distancing and safe hygiene. You will be kept fully informed of developments, and as always….
